Ball-Tampering Scandal Overshadows West Indies Win Over Afghanistan

A year after Australia’s ball-tampering scandal, West Indies have now joined the infamousĀ  cricketing community hall of shame, as West Indies batsman Nicholas Pooran admits to ball-tampering during the team’s final match of the one-day -international series against Afghanistan which they won. This victory brought their tally to 3-0 making them the winners of the series, however this victory was totally over-shadowed by the scandal.

Pooran was caught on camera tampering with the ball. The ICC later released the following statement

ā€œPooran was charged with violating Article 2.14 of the code, which relates to ā€˜changing the condition of the ball’ after video footage showed him scratching the surface of the ball with his thumbnailā€

In a statement released by Cricket West Indies of behalf of Pooran, he apologized to the cricket community saying,

ā€œI want to issue a sincere apology to my team mates, supporters and the Afghanistan team for what transpired on the field of play on Monday in Lucknow,ā€

He went on to say,

ā€œI recognise that I made an extreme error in judgement and I fully accept theĀ ICCĀ penalty. I want to assure everyone that this is an isolated incident and it will not be repeated. I promise to learn from this and come back stronger and wiser.ā€

Last year’s ball tampering scandal also known as the ‘Sandpapergate Scandal’ saw Australia’s Cameron Bancroft, as well as skipper Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner implicated leading to them all receiving “unprecedented ” sanctions as well as Smith being stripped of his captaincy.

Cricket West Indies is yet to issueĀ  out a statement on whether they will be taking any further action against the batsman but given the severity of the violation, i am sure that this will not be the last we hearĀ  about the scandal…
