Ball-Tampering Scandal Overshadows West Indies Win Over Afghanistan

A year after Australia’s ball-tampering scandal, West Indies have now joined the infamous  cricketing community hall of shame, as West Indies batsman Nicholas Pooran admits to ball-tampering during the team’s final match of the one-day -international series against Afghanistan which they won. This victory brought their tally to 3-0 making them the winners of the series, however this victory was totally over-shadowed by the scandal.

Pooran was caught on camera tampering with the ball. The ICC later released the following statement

“Pooran was charged with violating Article 2.14 of the code, which relates to ‘changing the condition of the ball’ after video footage showed him scratching the surface of the ball with his thumbnail”

In a statement released by Cricket West Indies of behalf of Pooran, he apologized to the cricket community saying,

“I want to issue a sincere apology to my team mates, supporters and the Afghanistan team for what transpired on the field of play on Monday in Lucknow,”

He went on to say,

“I recognise that I made an extreme error in judgement and I fully accept the ICC penalty. I want to assure everyone that this is an isolated incident and it will not be repeated. I promise to learn from this and come back stronger and wiser.”

Last year’s ball tampering scandal also known as the ‘Sandpapergate Scandal’ saw Australia’s Cameron Bancroft, as well as skipper Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner implicated leading to them all receiving “unprecedented ” sanctions as well as Smith being stripped of his captaincy.

Cricket West Indies is yet to issue  out a statement on whether they will be taking any further action against the batsman but given the severity of the violation, i am sure that this will not be the last we hear  about the scandal…
