Roger Federer won his game on Thursday beating Novak Djokovic in a 2 set match to confirm a spot in the ATP Finals semi-final round. The Swiss player won his sets 6-4 6-3. All eye’s were focused on the pair given their history and especially after their last match up at the Wimbledon finals. Federer was out to prove himself after a disappointing performance in his ATP Final opening match against Dominic Thiem in which he lost that mtach.
Djokovic’s lose also put the breaks on his quest to topple Nadal’s position as world number meaning the Spaniard will end the year on top of the world rankings.
Nadal, who is also playing in the ATP Final, has two major obstacles to achieve should he wish to join Federer in the semi’s. Firstly he has to win his face-off encounter today against Greek player Tsitsipas and even after that his hopes of proceeding to the next round all lie on Daniil Medvedev beating Alexander Zverev in their match. If Medvedev wins the game, then Nadal is automatically kick out of the tournament even if he wins his match against Tsitsipas.
Should Nadal proceed to the next round of the tournament, he will be facing Federer in the semi’s.
Djokovic, who had won his previous four encounter against Federer, went on to critize his poor performance in the game during the post game interview, going on to say:
“There was not much i did right”
This is the first time that Djokovic has not reached the semi-final stages of the ATP Finals since 2011.
“Realistically he was better player in all aspects and absolutely deserved to win,” he further added talking about Federer.
