New Zealand Test Victory Over England Marred By Racist Slurs

New Zealand beat visiting England by one inning and 65 runs to win the first test of the series. However their well deserved victory was overshadowed by the racist utterances of one spectator in the stands.

The test began with England batting first and reaching 353 all out in their first innings.New Zealand took to bat and 615-9 declared after 201 overs. England failed in their reply innings as they found themselves 197 all out after  96.2 overs.

England’s put on a very disappointing performance in their second innings finding themselves losing 3 wickets with only one run to show for it from 17 balls. Before the tea break they had already found themselves on 138-8.

Jofra Archer and Sam Curran tried their best to increase England’s tally but their 59 run partnership was  not enough to save the Poms from the clutches of pure utter defeat at the hands of Neil Wagner who decimated England’s lowe batting ranks finishing the game by taking England’s Stuart Broad for a duck bringing an end any hopes that England may have been clutching to.

The only thing that marred New Zealand’s well  deserved victory celebrations were the racial utterances from one “rogue” spectator who took to slurring racially abusing England’s Jofra Archer.

Archer came posted the following statement on his Twitter page :

“A bit disturbing hearing racial insults today whilst battling to help save my team , the crowd was been amazing this week except for that one guy”

The post has been awash with apologies and support from various members of the New Zealand cricket community as well as the general sporting community with the likes of England footballer Marcus Rashford posting:

“Unreal talent and already a national hero. Deserve better bro so just keep doing your thing” in his reply to Archer’s Tweet.

Racism has slowly being clawing its way across the different sporting disciplines and is affecting sportsmen and women across the world who become victims of such abuse whilst trying to represent their club/teams/ countries and entertain the very spectators that are abusing them.

It is sad how 5 days of brilliant cricket have totally been overshadowed by the bigotry utterances of one individual. We at Sportrazzi would like to point out the admirable stance taken by New Zealand’s cricketing board not  only in their efforts in finding the perpetrator but also the actions and support they have taken in their stance against racism. We can only hope that other sporting boards will learn from this example and bring us even closer to eradicating this cancer from all sporting disciplines.
