Real Madrid And Paris St-Germain go To UEFA Knockouts After Draw

Real Madrid and Paris St-Germain (PSG) have both qualified for the UEFA knockout stages dispite 2-2 draw. Real Madrid received confirmation of their spot just before their game with group leaders PSG after Club Bruges drew 1-1 with Galatasaray leaving the two top teams to sail  through to the next round of the Championships.

This confirmation did not in anyway take anything away from the game that was to be played as both team came out guns blazing in what ended up being a nail biting come back for PSG.

Real Madrid were definitely the stronger side as they went on to score their first goal of the match after 17 minutes of play. Karim Benzema was able to nicely finish up an attempt on goal by teammate Federico Valverde that saw the ball hit the post then rebound straight into the path of a ever vigilant Karim Benzema who sent it flying right into the back of the PSG net.

Real remained on the offensive throughout the first half. Then to add to the drama of the night,Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was shown a red card in the 41st minute after a controversial tackle just inside the penalty box that would have seen him leaving the pitch as well as giving PSG a penalty opportunity.

Unfortunately for PSG, after the referee consulted the VAR he rescinded the red card and instead awarded Real Madrid with a free kick from an earlier set of play where PSG midfielder Idrissa Gueye fouled Madrid defender Marcelo which culminated in the controversial tackle by the goalkeeper.

Benzema came back to score his second goal for Madrid with a brilliant header in the second half putting the home team in the lead 2-0 after 79 minutes of play. With 10 minutes left in the game and a 2 goal deficit, PSG looked to be undone.

However two minutes after Benzema’s goal, PSG’s Kylian Mbappe  set his team on the comeback trail after putting away PSG’s  first goal of the night after taking advantage of  Madrid’s defensive blunder right in front of their goal.

Three minutes later Pablo Sarabia scored PSG’s equalizing goal which came off a superb offensive play by the  visitors. This brought the game to an end with the teams drawing 2-2.
