Brazil were given an ideal opportunity of their own to equalize when they were awarded a penalty in the 20th minute, however Gabriel Jesus’s penalty attempt ended up going wide. Messi came close to extending his teams lead with an attempt on goal off a free kick in the 66th minute. Unfortunately for him, Becker was able to tip the ball over the posts.

Lautaro Martínez was afforded an opportunity to extend Argentina’s lead in the 80th minute of play as he received the ball in a open space from the corner kick. With a clear chance on goal, the 22 year old forward packed too much punch into his kick and hoofed the ball right over the goal, squandering a perfect opportunity.

Argentina dominated most of the second half which ended in a well deserved 0-1 victory  for them. This was Messi’s first international game since his 3 month ban from international play after accusing Copa America organizers and officials of being “corrupt”.

The ban was handed down to him by CONMEBOL along with a fine. Messi made this comment just after the Brazil v Argentina game in which he believed that Argentina were not awarded 2 key penalties as the organizers and officials were bent on seeing host team Brazil win the tournament.
