Messi Sends Barcelona To The Top With 0-1 Win Over Atletico

Barcelona are back on top of the Spanish La Liga table with a 0-1 win over Atletico Madrid thanks to a late goal From Lionel Messi.

Barcelona have now maintained a 19 game unbeaten streak against Atletico in all league games stemming back to 2010.

Barcelona are now top of the La Liga table tied on 31 points with Real Madrid with a 1 point goal difference separating the two big sides.

At first it looked as though both teams would have to be content with 1 point as it seemed the game was heading for a draw.

Atletico failed to follow through on a number of opportunities. Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen had an impressive game in which he managed to keep a clean sheet for the Barca side as he saved some very near goals from Mario Hermoso  and Atletico forward Álvaro Borja Morata.

Barcelona were also kept at bay by the Atletico goalkeeper continued to turn away Ivan Rakitic’s attempts. A brilliant header from Barca center back Gerard Pique almost put his team in the lead but it unfortunately ended up hitting the cross bar.

Messi then came through for his side with a last minute goal from a well placed assit from team mate Luis Suarez. This brought Messi’s tally to 11 goals in 10 appearances. Messi’s goal which came just a few minutes before the 90 minute mark gave Barcelona the 0-1 lead that saw them jumping to the top of the La Liga table head of rivals Real Madrid.
