Messi who already pocketed FIFA’s The Best Man award in September is tipped as the most likely recipient of the award after his 36 goals for Barcelona in La Lig a last season made him top scorer of  the season.

However Messi has some stiff  competition with  skeptics also in  favor of Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk taking home the prize as he has already won a number of awards this year including UEFA’s Player of The Year Award.

Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp made the following statement in regards to who he believes should be taking home the award tonight between Messi and van  Dijk:

“If you give the Ballon d’Or to the best player of this generation then you should give it always to Lionel Messi. That’s how it is,”

“But if you give it to the best player of last season, then it was Virgil van Dijk. I don’t know exactly how it will work but that is how I see it.”
