Napoli has sacked manager Carlo Ancelotti after he helped them progress through to the next round of the UEFA Champions League after a 4-0 win to Genk on Tuesday.
It seemed that Carlo Ancelotti had no idea of his pending fate at the club as he celebrated his sides 4-0 victory and progression to the final 16 of the Champions League tournament.
In his post-match interview Ancelotti went on to talk about a possible future with the club unaware that his fate had already been sealed as he went on to say:
“I’ll speak to president De Laurentiis tomorrow and we’ll make the best decision for Napoli”.
“As far as I’m concerned, with certain players coming back and the right conditions in place, this team can still target fourth place.”
“The win tonight is a weight off our shoulders and can give the players a big boost for the future.”
The win against Genk although allowing his side to progress in the tournament was not enough to erase his 9 games winless streak that overshadowed his current success.
His dispute with club president Aurelio de Laurentiisover allowing the players to go home and rest instead of attending a weekend-long training camp as ordered by the president may have also contributed to his abrupt dismissal.
Ancelotti joined Napoli in May 2018 with the team finishing in 2nd place at the end of the 2018/19 season. However, a recent string of poor performances now sees the team placed at 7th in the Italian Serie A log.
Ancelotti who is one of only 3 managers to win 3 European cups/tournaments will have no trouble finding a new posting as word is circulating that the former Napoli manager is already looking to be scooped up by Arsenal and Everton who are desperately looking for permanent managers after the sacking of Unai Emery and Marco Silva.
