Another Blow For Japan’s Team As Kei Nishikori Pulls Out Of ATP Cup

Nishikori and Uchiyama now join Andy Murray and Roger Federer as top tennis stars who will not be featuring at this inaugural tennis tournament.

Japan’s team for the ATP Cup has been dealt another blow as Kei Nishikori pulls out as he is still recovering from the elbow injury that has kept him of the court since the US Open.

Yoshihito Nishioka will be replacing him during the tennis tournament that takes place from 3 January – 12 January in Perth.

Japan’s team had already lost Yasutaka Uchiyama who pulled out last week and is to be replaced by Toshihide Matsui.

It is still not clear whether Kei Nishikori will have recovered in time to participate in the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on 20 January.

He underwent surgery on the elbow in October.

Nishikori released the following statement when announcing his withdrawal from the tournament:

“Today, together with my team, we have made this decision as I am still not 100 percent ready to compete at the highest level”

This is the first time the ATP Cup tournament will take place. There is #15 million up for grabs in prize money with up to 750 singles and 250 doubles ATP ranking points on offer.

There will be 6 nations competing in the round-robin stage made up of 24 nations. The winners will then move onto the knockout stage with the finals being held in Sydney.
