Liverpool youth squad will be given a chance to shine as the club is forced to field two teams as they compete in two different competitions over 2 days in 2 different continents.
Liverpool finds themselves competing at home against Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup quarter-final today and then will be in Qatar tomorrow 18 December as they face off with Monterrey in the Club World Cup semi-finals.
Liverpool has chosen to focus on the international Club World Cup as this is where they will be sending their stronger side and will instead field a much younger and inexperienced side in today’s match against Aston Villa.

Manager Jurgen Klopp explained how they came up with the decision to send a stronger side to Qatar by saying :
” In England, [the Club World Cup] is not that important, for the rest of the world they look at that. We are Liverpool, a worldwide brand, we cannot do what we want, we must do what our supporters want.”
Liverpool, who already fielded a largely youthful squad against Arsenal on 30 October 2019 in a match that they won on penalties after the game ended with both teams tied 5-5.
It is most likely that the squad facing Aston Villa tonight will be made up mainly of the same youngsters that played in the Arsenal match as the EFL rules state that they must field a squad “that is largely consistent with those that have participated in earlier rounds of this season’s competition,”.

Tonight’s game will be played with Liverpool U23 coach Neil Critchley in charge of the youthful squad. The 41-year-old coach will be in charge of Liverpool’s first team for the first time.

The Reds will be sending their dominant side to Qatar under the leadership of Jurgen Klopp as they seek to remain in contention for the Club World Cup which they are yet to add to their impressive trophy collection.
Liverpool will be facing off against the Mexican champions Monterrey without Joel Matip, Fabinho, Nathaniel Clyne and Dejan Lovren who are all recovering from injuries.
