Past  Experience

The former Arsenal player joins the club after having been under the guiding wing of Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola as an assistant coach since 2016.

Together Pep and his assistant coach have led Man City to 2 Premier League titles, 2 EFL Cups and an FA Cup.

Mikel Arteta is already accredited with brining changes to Arsenal from his days as a player when he confronted the club about their lack of bonuses and incentives to motivate players and staff to strive for more than the bare minimum.

His previous experience and knowledge of the club, as well as what he had been taught by Pep during his time initially, made him Arsenal’s most likely candidate to succeed Arsene Wenger after his departure at the club, however they eventually chose to go with Unai Emery.

Offers

Arsenal is not the only club to have tried poaching the es assistant coach from Manchester City as he has had offers coming from clubs such as Lyon and Newcastle which he graciously turned down.

Former boss Pep Guardiola has made it clear from the start that the Man City club was fully aware of the clubs approaching their assistant coach with offers and would not stand in his way should he choose to leave with Pep threatening at one point to kick Arteta out himself if he did not take up one of these life-changing opportunities.

The Future

Arteta’s first test with the team comes today as he faces his former side Everton at Goodison Park.

With everyone looking to him to turn the tides for the club, the pressure is on for the new .37-year-old Arsenal coach. Though realistically he should be given time to prove himself as the changes required at Arsenal can not happen overnight.
