Mikel Arteta seemed to finally be putting the pieces of a once glorious Arsenal back together again as the Gunners put up an impenetrable defense for the first time this season.

Pepe was definitely not done for the night as a later attempt in the 39th minutes saw his shot narrowly deflecting off the goal post.

A brilliant set-piece play from a corner taken by Pepe led to Sokratis Papastathopoulos scoring Arsenal’s second goal just before half time.

Manchester United found their footing in the second half with a near goal coming from Fred however Arsenal’s defense did not falter on their opening game of the New year.

It was quite clear that Man Utd seemed out of it throughout the night and the absence of Paul Pogba did not help the situation.

Ole Gunnar Solskajer’s side were unable to scape any point in their first game of the new year and find themselves at 5th  place on the Premier League table.

Arsenal now move up to 10th position and are 9 points away from a position in the top four.
