Ever since the fallout, Xhaka was stripped of his captaincy and then did not play for six games in all competitions. Unai Emery only chose to put him back on the pitch on Thursday 28 November when the Gunners went on to lose to 2-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Europa League.

The departure of Unai Emery, however, brought about the coming of a new era at the club under the helm of new manager Mikel Arteta.

Arteta is on a mission to heal old wounds and give everyone a clean slate.

He has been on a mission to re-encourage the Gunners in order for them to go back t their former glory as a club. He has already started the new year off on a good note having beaten both Manchester United and Leeds in his first 2 opening matches of the new year.

On explaining his bid to keep former captain Xhaka at the Emirates, Mikel Arteta went on to say:

“I wanted him to hear from me my opinion on him, and that I was ready to support him and that I was ready to push the club to be supportive of him too, because I thought he could be a really, really good player for us and he could enjoy playing under me in this football club.

“I tried to convince him that way. He thought about it, he had a very positive response afterwards, and I think he changed his mind.”
