Venus Williams hopes of another Grand Slam title at the Australian Open were shattered by Coco Gauff on Margret Court, who took her on a trip down memory lane and beat her in straight sets in the first round.

Coco Gauff opened strong in the first set but Venus Williams was able to pull back forcing a tie-break. 15-year-old Gauff was, however, able to get back into form and win out the set.

Gauff then went to on to dominate the second set and finish the match in 1 hr 35mins scoring 7-6 (7-5) 6-3.

This was Gauff’s first time playing in the Australian Open and to have won her debut against the 7 time Grand Slam champion and also the oldest player in the draw is an amazing feat.

She proved to skeptics that her initial victory last year when she beat Venus at Wimbledon, it was not a fluke.

She went on to say the following in her post-match interview :

“That was really difficult. She played really well and I was really nervous for today’s match – I was a bit shocked when I saw the draw, but glad I was able to get through it,”

The teenager was shocked by the amount of support she received at the Margret Court with the crowd shouting her name in support.

“I just want to say thank you guys, you guys were chanting my name and I only thought that would happen at the US Open,” Coco went on to say.

Coco Gauff got her wild card to play in the Australian Open thanks to her performance in the US Open in which she lost to Naomi Osaka in the third round. She later went on to win her first WTA Tour title in Linz, Austria in October.
