15-year-old Coco Gauff is on her way to her first Grand Slam title having knocked out Australian Open defending champion Naomi Osaka at Rod Lave Arena today.
Coco Gauff already made waves having previously beaten both Venus Williams and Sorana Cirstea in her opening two rounds of the Australian Open, setting her up for a 3rd round showdown with defending champion Naomi Osaka.
Naomi Osaka and Coco had previously battled it out in the rd round of the US Open in which Naomi went on to beat her younger competitor.
This time Gauff was not going to let history repeat itself as she beat Naomi in straight sets going 6-3, 6-4.
After qualifying for the final 16 round she went on to say the following in her post-match interview:
“Two years ago I lost first round in juniors, and now I’m here. This is crazy. I was just telling myself one point at a time and keep fighting because you never know what happens on this court. I’m on Rod Laver Arena, I can’t believe this.”
The disappointing loss to Gauff could see Naomi Osaka dropping out of the top 10 ranking.
According to the Guardian, 15-year-old Coco’s win over Naomi makes her the “the youngest player to beat a top-five ranked opponent since Jennifer Capriati toppled Gabriela Sabatini at the 1991 US Open.”
Congradulations Coco Gauff!!!!
