27th seed Wang Qiang defeated Serena Williams after three sets in the third round of the Australian Open. Qiang won the first set  6-4, then Serena managed a narrow comeback to win the second set 6-7 (2-7) before going down in the third 7-5.

“I was optimistic I would be able to win. I thought, ‘OK now finish this off’. I honestly didn’t think I was going to lose that match.” she said in her post-game interview, going on to add:

“I just made far too many errors to be a professional athlete today.”

“If we were just honest with ourselves, it’s all on my shoulders. I lost that match. It’s not about the tournament, it’s just like I can’t play like that. I literally can’t do that again. That’s unprofessional. It’s not cool.”

38 Year old Serena Williams was hoping to win her 24th Grand Slam Title at Melbourne Park which would not only have put her level with Margaret Court but would have also been a fitting way to celebrate Margaret Courts’ 50th anniversary of her calendar Grand Slam.
