Wang Qiang brought Serena Williams 24th Grand Slam Title hoped to an end as she defeated the 8th seeded Williams at the Australian Open at Melbourne Park.
27th seed Wang Qiang defeated Serena Williams after three sets in the third round of the Australian Open. Qiang won the first set 6-4, then Serena managed a narrow comeback to win the second set 6-7 (2-7) before going down in the third 7-5.
Having beaten Wang in their previous encounter at the US Open last summer and coming off the backdrop of winning her first tournament in 3 years in Auckland earlier this month Williams admits she might have come into this matchup a bit more overconfident then she should have.
“I was optimistic I would be able to win. I thought, ‘OK now finish this off’. I honestly didn’t think I was going to lose that match.” she said in her post-game interview, going on to add:
“I just made far too many errors to be a professional athlete today.”
“If we were just honest with ourselves, it’s all on my shoulders. I lost that match. It’s not about the tournament, it’s just like I can’t play like that. I literally can’t do that again. That’s unprofessional. It’s not cool.”
38 Year old Serena Williams was hoping to win her 24th Grand Slam Title at Melbourne Park which would not only have put her level with Margaret Court but would have also been a fitting way to celebrate Margaret Courts’ 50th anniversary of her calendar Grand Slam.
Wang Qiang pulled off an amazing Australian Open upset in defeating Williams as her hard work and determination following their previous encounter had finally paid off. She went on to say the following in her post-match interview:
“I think my team always believed I can do,”
“After last time I did really hard work on court and off the court.”
