The Spanish top seed Nadal will now go on to face Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals.

Simona Halep managed to also make it through to the quarter-finals after having beaten Elise Mertens on the Rod Laver Arena in straight sets.

Halep went on to win 6-4 6-4 against the 24-year-old Belgium and will now face Anett Kontaveit in the quarter-finals.

Simona Halep, just like Rafael Nadal, was yet to have dropped in the tournament until today’s matchup with Mertens.

“I played Elise in the Doha final last year – I led by a set and was up 4-2 but lost the match,”

“I knew I had to stay focused today. I was a little nervous at 4-3 but was strong enough to finish.” Halep said in her post-match interview.
