Chelsea In Last Minute Bid For Napoli Forward Dries Mertens

Chelsea have made a bid for Napoli forward Dries Mertens and are waiting for the club to respond before the transfer window deadline at 11 pm on Friday 31 January.

With only 6months left on his contract with Napoli and no sign of a contract extension, Frank Lampard is hoping to scoop up the Napoli forward as a much-needed addition to his squad.

Dries Mertens has been at Napoli since 2013 and has 88 goals in 219 appearances for the club. He is currently only 4 goals away from becoming Napoli’s top goal scorer which makes the decision to move from the club before achieving this new record highly unlikely.

It is likely that Chelsea will only be able to offer him a short term contract as he is already 32-years-old and they have a policy of not offering players above 30 years of age more than 12-month extensions.

According to football.com, the deal could be as much as £8million. Chelsea are still waiting for a response from Napoli about their offer but time is running out as the transfer window closes Friday 31 January.
