Joe Root also contributed 61 runs to the comeback before a pitch from Dwaine Pretorius had him caught out by Faf du Plessis.

Stokes managed his onslaught of 72 runs off 47 balls scoring seven fours and three sixes.

Proteas bowler Anrich Nortjie took 3 wickets from 18 overs followed by Kagiso Rabada who took 2 wickets from 20 overs and Keshav Maharaj who also took 2 wickets from 43 overs.

South Africa who won the first test of the series by 107 runs now find themselves on the backend as they face a major uphill battle on day 4 of the second test trying to chase 438 runs to clinch a victory.
