Novak Djokovic is through to the Australian Open finals to defend his Grand Slam title after beating Roger Federer in straight sets at Melbourne Park.

Novak Djokovic pulled of an amazing comeback in the first set after finding himself 40-0 and 4-1 down.

He recovered from this and further went on to win the remaining sets 7-6 (7/1) 6-4 6-3.

Knowing very well how close he came to  losing the first set and how that may have affected the outcome of the game, Djokovic went on to say the following in his post-match interview:

“The match could have definitely gone a different way if he has used those break points [in the sixth game],”

“He started well, I was nervous.

“Respect to Roger for coming out tonight. He was obviously hurt and wasn’t close to this best in terms of movement.”

The 16 Grand Slam champion Djokovic acknowledges that Roger Federer, although losing the semi-finals, was not playing at his best due to his groin which led to him going for a medical break during his quarter-final game with Tennys Sandgren.

This caused many to suspect that he would pull out of today’s match. Instead, he came our very strong in the first set and it looked like he was in perfect shape to bulldoze his way through the match up until his form began to slip giving Djokovic the opportunity he needed to fight his way back and eventually win the match.

Novak Djokovic will now face the winner of the match between Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev as he hopes to defend his Australian Open title and get the 18th Grand Slam of his career.
