Showdown As Novak Djokovic Defends Aussie Title Against Dominic Thiem

Austrian Dominic Thiem is through to his first Australian Open final where he will face defending champion Novak Djokovic after beating Alexander Zverev 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-4) today in Melbourne.

Austrian Dominic Thiem is through to his first Australian Open finals where he will face defending champion Novak Djokovic after beating Alexander Zverev 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-4) today in Melbourne.

The 26-year-old was held down in the first set which he lost 3-6. He later managed to rally himself together and go on to win the following 3 sets but Alexander Zverev did not go down without a fight with two tie breaks in the final two sets.

Dominic Theim will now face Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open Finals on Sunday in Melbourne.  He beat tennis rival Roger Federer in straight sets in his semi-final qualifying match. Djokovic will be defending his title as he looks to win his 18th Grand Slam title and 8th Australian Open title.

Dominic Thiem is is looking to become the second Austrian tennis player to win a Grand Slam following in the footsteps of Thomas Muster who won the French Open in 1995.

He went on to say the following in his post-game interview:

“To reach the Australian Open final is unreal,”

“Two tie-breaks, so tough and so close, it was almost impossible to break him.”

Alexander Zverev who lost the semi-final match was looking to reach his first Grand Slam final match.
