Two time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep has made it through to the Australian Open Final 16 after she beat Yulia Putintseva in straight sets 6-1 6-4.
In an Australian Open that has been full of twists and turns as big names such as Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka being dismissed in earlier stages of the tournament, the veteran Halep has managed to continue her campaign to another Grand Slam title.
Simona Halep who won last years Wimbledon and the 2018 French Open is not riding the laurels of her previous achievements as she went onto say:
“I am not focusing on other players, just on myself. At this level, every match is really tough.”
“It’s been a great year last year but this is different tennis,” she told Rod Laver Arena.
“I am ready, I give everything I have to win and really, really happy to be in the second week now.”
Halep will go on to play the winner of the match between Elise Mertens and Cici Bellis in the next round consisting of the final 16 players of the Australian Open in Melbourne.
