Home favourite Ashleigh Barty missed her opportunity to bring the Australian Open title home as she lost the semi-finals match to American Sofia Kenin 7-6 (8/6) 7-5.

Fans were hoping to see Ashleigh Barty bring the Australian Open Title back to Australia since it was last won by an Australian tennis player in 1978.

This is the first time that Sofia Kenin has reached a Grand Slam final and she will be going up against Spain’s Garbine Muguruza who is a two-time major winner.

Sofia Kenin was born in Russia but her family moved to America when she was five years old which is why she is playing under the American flag.

In her post-game speech she expressed her joy in  finally accomplishing the achievement of reaching a Grand Slam final going on to say:

“I’m just speechless, I honestly can’t believe this. I’ve dreamed about this moment since I was five years old… I’ve worked so hard to get here,”

“She came up with some really great shots. I knew she wasn’t going to give it up to me — I really had to fight out here. There’s a reason she’s number one.”

Garbine Muguruza won her semi-final match against  Simona Halep  6-7 (8/10) 5-7.

Temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius in Melbourne may have played a factor in Halep’s lose as she had not dropped a set all tournament until her semi-final match up with Garbine.

“It was very, very hot today and I felt it. Killed me after the first set, in the end of the first set,”

“The sun was strong, I didn’t like that much to play in this weather.

“The level of energy went down a little bit, and I felt it in the legs. I was not used to it in the last two weeks, we didn’t have that much heat.” Halep said after the match when describing how the heat played a factor in her performance.
