Novak Djokovic won his 17th Grand Slam when he beat Dominic Thiem at the Australian Open Final in Melbourne. He is now 3 more titles away from Roger Federer’s record 20 Grand Slams.
Dominic Thiem is still looking to win his first Grand Slam title after being beaten 6-4 4-6 2-6 6-3 6-4Â by Djokovic.
Thiem looked to be set to take the match at one point after taking the lead in the second and third sets.
When Novak Dominic Thiem ended up calling the doctor twice, it seemed that victory would be inevitable for the 26-year-old but Novak Djokovic was able to fight his way back and win the Australian Open title once again in Melbourne.
“I was hydrated well and everything. Apparently the doctor said I wasn’t hydrated enough,”
“After I lost the second set, I start to feel really bad on the court. My energy dropped significantly.” Djokovic went on to say explaining his medical emergency during the match that almost saw him missing out on defending his title.
Dominic Thiem who has won 16 ATP titles was a crowd favourite with the supporters so much so that Djokovic was at one point forced to hush the crowd down by placing his finger over his lips as the two contestants played out their game.
“I would like to start by saying congratulations to Dominic for an amazing tournament,” went on to say during the post-game ceremony, and went on to admit how close he came to losing the final matchup as he went on to say:
“It wasn’t meant to be tonight. Tough luck and it was a tough match, but you were very close to winning it and you definitely have a lot more time in your career and I’m sure that you will get one of the Grand Slam trophies. More than one.
