SPAL who are currently at the bottom of the Serie A table have sacked manager Leonardo Semplici and replaced him with Former Italy U21 coach Luigi Di Biagio.
Leonardo Seplici becomes the 10th managerial sacking this season in Serie A since the start of the 2019/20 season.
He joined SPAL in 2014 while they were still in Serie C and elevated the club to the Serie A league for the first time in 49 years during the 2017/18 season in which they narrowly avoided relegation as they finished 17th at the end of the season.
At the end of their 2018/19 campaign, Semplici was able to improve on his previous year’s result with the team finishing at 13th position.
This year, however, SPAL have decided to part ways with Semplici as the team finds itself at the bottom of the table with only 15 points from 23 games.
Having lost their last 3 consecutive games, the club has decided to go in another direction leading to Semplici being sacked and the club hiring former U21 coach and Italian national team caretaker manager Luigi Di Biagio.
Di Biagio, who resigned from coaching the Italian U21 squad after their first-round elimination from the 2019 UEFA European U21 Championship, has signed a contract until 30 June 2021.
He has been given the task of trying to keep the side out of relegation with his first test coming up this Sunday as SPAL faces Lecci who are sitting just outside of relegation at 17th position on the Serie A table.
