Atletico Madrid take on Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg scheduled for tonight at Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid.

With Atletico going head to head with Liverpool four times before and both teams winning at least one of those encounters and drawing the other two, tonight’s lineup is going to be a close call.

Atletico will be looking to put an end to Liverpool’s breathtaking unbeaten run this season but that won’t come easy as Liverpool are just coming off the first-ever English Premier League winter break fully rested and prepared for battle.

It is still uncertain if Diego Costa will make an appearance for Atletico tonight but if ever there he was needed, tonight is the night.

Jan Olak will be key in today’s match if Atletico has any hopes of defeating Liverpool let alone keeping them at bay.

Atletico are currently 4th in the Spanish La Liga. The hosts will have to take on Liverpool without Trippier who is out with a hip injury, Felix who is recovering from a muscle injury and Herrara who is also unavailable although the reasons are unspecified.

A possible Atletico line-up may look something like this:

Oblak; Arias, Savić, Felipe, Saúl Ñíguez; Koke, Thomas, Llorente, Vitolo; Correa, Morata.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are returning from a much deserved Premier League winter break which has the squad rejuvenated and ready for action.

With only Clyne out with a knee injury and Shaqiri recovering from his calf injury, the possible Liverpool line-up for tonight’s game could look something like this:

Alisson Becker; Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Gomez, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mané

Roberston will need to avoid a booking in tonight’s game if he wishes to play in the return league.

Klopp’s side is currently sailing away at the type of the English Premier League and still find themselves in the round of 16 for the FA Cup.

With the defensive partnership of Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez which has only seen Liverpool concede one goal in 11 matches, Atletico will be under a lot of pressure should they have any hope of progressing in the Champions League.
