Football legend and GOAT Lionel Messi has gone on to break another record as he becomes the first footballer to win the Laureus Sportsman of the Year award.

The football legend shares the award alongside Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton. This is the first time in the awards 20 year history that the coveted prize has been shared.

In 2019 Lionel Messi won his 6th Ballon d’Or award making him the leading winner of the award.

He also was crowned The Best FIFA Men’s Player of 2019, he won the 2019 European Golden Shoe and the La Liga Best Player for 2018-19 season.

With this amazing list of achievements, it is not surprising that he walked away with the Laureus Sportsman of the Year award further emphasising his status as footballs greatest of all time (GOAT).

The prestigious event also viewed as the Oscars of the sporting world was held in Berlin on Monday.

Other winners on the night included Rugby World Cup winners, South African rugby team, the Springboks, who walked away with the 2019 Team of the Year beating Liverpool and the US Women football team.

Chloe Kim took the Action Sportsperson of the Year award after winning gold medals at the World Championship halfpipe and X Games SuperPipe.

Simone Biles, a gymnast from the US, won her third Laureus sportswoman of the year award after taking 5 gold medals in Stuttgart that year at the World Championships. She now has a record 25 gold medals to her name.
