Serena Williams and Sofia Kenin Give America 2-0 Lead Over Latvia

The new Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin and Serena Williams have given America a 2-0 lead over Latvia at the Fed Cup in Washington.

The new Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin and Serena Williams have given America a 2-0 lead over Latvia at the Fed Cup in Washington.

Sofia Kenin wasted no time in dispatching with her opponent Anastasija Sevastova beat her in straight sets 6-2 6-2 taking just 68 minutes to dispatch her.

“I was obviously a little nervous coming in after Australia,” Kenin went onto say.

“I felt tired, but I tried to get that out of my mind and just represent and do what I do best.”

Serena Williams who was knocked out in the third round of the Australian Open by Qian Wang, unfortunately, bringing to an end her Grand Slam title hopes.

She won her match with 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/3).

The win against Ostapenko means that Serena Williams still retains her unbeaten record at the Fed Cup singles, now going  14-0.

It took 23 time Grand Slam champion one hour and 46 minutes to overcome her difficult opponent in Everett Washington.

“I’m really proud of being able to get the win for the team,”  Williams said after her match.

Williams last played singles at the Fed Cup in 2015 and made her last appearance at the Fed Cup playing doubles with her sister Venus Williams in 2018.
