UEFA officials say that the Coronavirus will not affect Euro 2020 play-offs such as the England vs Italy match scheduled later this month at Wembley.

UEFA officials say that the Coronavirus will not affect Euro 2020 play-offs such as the England vs Italy match scheduled later this month at Wembley.

The UEFA body will be meeting in the Netherlands on Monday to discuss the impact that the  Coronavirus which has laid havoc to various sporting disciplines across Asia and most recently in Europe.

UEFA will wait for the outcome of the UK Cabinet Office Briefing Rooms (COBRA) emergency meeting, in which they will be discussing the Coronavirus, before making any decisions regarding the footballing schedule.

At the current moment, UEFA are adamant that the Euro 2020 playoffs scheduled later this month will still go  ahead as Greg Clarke, who is both Football Association (FA) chairman and vice -president of at FIFA, wen to tell Sky Sports News:

“We’re planning on the basis that they will go ahead,”

“If the government decides on a change of policy, of course we will adhere to that policy.”

“Clarity soon is better, but the facts are changing so quickly, you can’t penalise the government for not quite knowing what the situation will be like in a month. I understand the problem.”

However, with the rate that the virus is spreading in Europe, having recently affected sports in Italy this past week as well as World Rugby also looking at postponing some of their fixtures, UEFA may need to brace themselves for the worst-case scenario.

As the Euro 2020 tournament is to be played over 12 countries, the risk and fear of the Coronavirus spreading are far greater an unless the rate of cases begins to reduce before the playoffs begin, some of the scheduled game will either have to be postponed or have the venues changed.

For now the Euro 2020 play-offs that will see England vs Italy at Wembley is scheduled to go ahead until further notice.
