The tournament which was due to be held in California was called off after public health officials declared a public health emergency after a confirmed case of Coronavirus was reported in the area.

The Indian Wells, otherwise known as the BNP Paribas Open is one of the biggest tournaments outside of the four Grand Slams, earning it the nickname, the “fifth slam”.

The news of the cancellation came after most of the competing tennis players had already arrived for the tournament.

With over 500 confirmed cases an 22 deaths from the Coronavirus it seemed totally irresponsible to put the lives of 400,000 people at risk just for the sake of the tournament, hence the cancellation.

The WTA and tournament marks the first major sporting event to be cancelled in the US with more expected to follow as the Coronavirus continues to spread.

NBA teams have already been told to come up with alternative strategies as their upcoming games way need to be held behind closed doors should the virus continue to spread at this rate.

Defending champion Dominic Thiem will now get to keep his title a little bit longer.
