The fate of UK’s upcoming sporting events, mainly football and rugby will be decided at the Cabinet Office Briefing Rooms (COBRA) meeting that will be chaired by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday.

With the recent outbreak of the Coronavirus in the UK, the meeting will decide on whether to can all large crowd-drawing events such as football, rugby and other events to reduce the spread of the virus.

Asia and some parts of Europe have already had their sports fixture affecting by the Coronavirus outbreak with China having to postpone the start of its top football league. Italy last week had various games held behind closed doors whilst 5 major top-flight games over the weekend were postponed altogether.

With 12 new cases of Coronavirus recently reported in the UK, Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be looking to stop the spread of the virus as soon as possible.

Sporting bodies such as World Rugby and UEFA are also meeting today to discuss the fate of the upcoming scheduled sporting fixtures but a much as FIFA vice president would like the upcoming Euro 2020 football games to continue as scheduled later this month, the government may invoke emergency powers banning all public gatherings which would have devastating effects on Englands sporting calender.

With top-flight competitions like the Euro 2020, English Premier League, Six Nations rugby as well as a variety of other sporting events being scheduled throughout England this month, such a ban would force various sporting disciplines to either cancel, postpone their fixture while they find alternative locations or wait out the ban.
