The International Olympics Committee (IOC) will be announcing the new dates for the Paralympics and Olympics which are now going to be held in 2021.

For weeks the IOC have been standing on the stance that the Tokyo 2020 Olympics would go ahead as scheduled this year amidst the Coronavirus pandemic that is spreading across the globe.

Whilst most sports disciplines have agreed to either postpone or cancel their respective competitions, Olympic organisers stayed adamant that the games would proceed as scheduled.

However, given the recent surge of COVID-19 cases that forced most countries across the globe to close their borders, with some even implementing a total lockdown to stop the spread of the coronavirus, the IOC has been forced to reconsider their stance.

On Tuesday the IOC announced that they would be postponing the games until 2021 given that it would not be possible to simply postpone the games by a few months.

In a telephone conference held between IOC President Thomas Bach and the 33 international sports federations, it was agreed that the games would be held in the summer of 2021.

“The agreement is that we want to organize these Olympic Games at the latest in summer 2021. That means that the task force can consider the broader picture and this is not restricted just to the summer months,” the IOC President announced.

“All the options are on the table before or during the summer of 2021.”

The IOC will announce the new dates for the Paralympics and Olympics in about 3 weeks. The decision comes as many participating countries had suggested the possibility of pulling out of this year’s games to protect their athletes,  a move already taken by Canada.
