UEFA Banking On August Return With Plans Already Underway

“We are confident that football can restart in the months to come with conditions that will be dictated by public authorities — and believe that any decision of abandoning domestic competitions is, at this stage, premature and not justified.”

UEFA, the European Club Association and the European Leagues are looking to resume competitions by August already putting into place plans to finish up pending competitions.

The associations have already issued a  joint letter to European clubs not to abandon season as of yet, doing so only as a last resort as they look into ways to salvage the remainder of this year’s football season.

The letter was sent out after Belgian League had suggested cancelling the rest of their season and announcing Club Brugge as season champions as they had a 15 point lead on the table.

In their joint letter, UEFA, the European Club Association and European Leagues went on to say:

“Their work is now focusing on scenarios encompassing the months of July and August, including the possibility that the Uefa competitions restart after the completion of domestic leagues,” the letter wrote.

“We are confident that football can restart in the months to come with conditions that will be dictated by public authorities — and believe that any decision of abandoning domestic competitions is, at this stage, premature and not justified.”

The cancelling of any competitions would leave UEFA in a very perplexing position in trying to figure out who qualifies for the next season of the Champions League as well as Europa League tournament.

Although Belgium was willing to announce Club Brugge as season winners, many other competitions may not be as open to having over championship titles so so easily.

The football associations will just have to wait and see how the situation with the COVID-19 pandemic goes before making any drastic plans as we get closer to the June 30th deadline.
