The cycling event was scheduled to take place from the 27 June to 19 July but given that many countries are currently undergoing lockdown procedures to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, it is unlikely that the event will be able to go ahead as scheduled.
Many cyclists have not be able to practise, let alone be cleared for travel in time for the originally intended dates.
Organisers are hoping that they will be able to postpone rather than actually have to cancel the Tour de France.
Just as the Wimbledon Championships tennis tournament, the Tour de France has only ever been cancelled during WWI and WWII since its inception in 1903.
