UEFA today confirmed that the Women’s Euro 2021 has been postponed and will take place in England from 6 July to 31 July 2022. Essentially moving the event by a year and confirming that England will still host the global event.
Global sport faces unprecedented times with countless sporting events being cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19. Most high-profile events such as the Tokyo Olympics, the London and Boston marathon, and worldwide football have been postponed by a few months, a year at the most.

On a statement found on the UEFA website, UEFA’s chief of women’s football, Nadine Kessler, said: “The core question guiding us together with the English FA was: What is best for women’s football?
With the Olympics now being confirmed for summer 2021, we firmly believe that moving to 2022 is in the best interests of the tournament, the players, the fans, women’s football partners, and everybody involved in all areas and at all levels of the game.”
These sentiments were echoed in a statement released by The English FA’s director of women’s football, Baroness Sue Campbell.

“The sporting calendar must adapt while the world tackles something much bigger than sport. In these unprecedented times, it should be reiterated that the health of our communities remains the absolute priority for us all.”
Campbell continued, “As a result, following discussions with UEFA, we fully support its decision to postpone UEFA Women’s EURO 2021. We agree that this decision will ultimately benefit the tournament, creating its own window in the football calendar.”
UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin added that the postponement would be beneficial to women’s football in general. UEFA and the FA agreed that the extension allows for more time to deliver an exceptional and well-planned event.
Wembley Stadium will host the final on 31 July 2022.
