D-Day For Liverpool As Clubs Meet To Decide Premier League Fate

If the season is cut short and even if Liverpool are declared champions based on the fact that they are 25 points ahead of second-place Manchester City, the victory will still be a hollow one, with sceptics always raising the possibility of the club losing all its remaining games, especially given their slump in form just before the season was suspended.

The fate of Liverpool may be decided today as Premier League clubs meet to decide how and when the football season will conclude due to the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown.

With 92 games remaining in the 2019/20 season, the main focus of the meeting will be to decide on a cut of date for the Premier League season. Many clubs are already calling for June 30 to be declared the official cut off date.

The reason being this date has been chosen is that a number of players contracts will expire then and that may leave a lot of clubs exposed as players will now be able to leave the clubs anytime they want. Although FIFA had asked players to sign rolling contracts, there is no legal obligation to do so.

If players out of contract choose to leave their current squads or just choose not to play the integrity of the Premier League competition will be at stake as some teams will be participating from a handicapped position without the full strength of their squad.

The decision on when to end the football competition will also have grave effects on Liverpool who were in line to win their first Premier League title in over two decades.

The meeting will take place via video conference at 10:30 am and will be attended by representatives from all 20 Premier League clubs in the form of owners or senior executives.

Another topic up for discussion will be the financial impact of the suspension of games due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Clubs are losing out on millions of pounds worth of revenue resulting in players and senior staff taking pay-cuts.
