Phil Neville has ended speculation and announced that he will not renew his contract as head coach of the England Women’s team. Neville currently has a contract until July 2021.

This announcement comes a day after UEFA confirmed that the Women’s Euro will be played in 2022, with England as the host nation. There was speculation earlier this week that Neville would not renew his contract with the Lionesses.

Gary Neville stated in an interview with Sky Sports that he had spoken to his brother about the speculation. Gary reiterated that his brother would honour his contract with the England team.

The FA’s director of women’s football, Sue Campbell told Sky Sports: “Once football returns after this difficult period, Phil will continue his work with the Lionesses on the further development of his squad.”

Neville initially looked to be the perfect man for the job; however, his team’s recent form has thrown some doubt over his abilities. The Lionesses have 7 defeats in their last 11 games.

There was high expectation surrounding England’s World Cup campaign after their semi-final finish in 2015. An additional semi-final finish at the 2019 World Cup did not assist Neville’s image with critics expecting more for the team.

The FA confirmed that Neville will be part of the team that will select his replacement. Naturally, there have been a few names thrown around and they will be thrown into the thick of it immediately.

There are five prominent competitions on the horizon for the Women’s game. The Olympic Games in 2021 which will be followed by the Euros in 2022 and the World Cup in 2023. Looking into the distant future, the Paris 2024 Olympics and then the 2025 Euros.
