“I would absolutely love to play for the Proteas but it’s so unsure at the moment, where we’re heading with cricket around the world,” said de Villiers.

De Villiers told Mbangwa that he is in conversation with Proteas head coach, Mark Boucher, and Cricket South Africa (CSA) director of cricket, Graeme Smith. It is helpful that he played with both men in the past.

However, with the T20 World Cup still scheduled for October 2020 in Australia, would De Villiers be match fit? And able to offer a substantial contribution to the team?

The wicketkeeper-batsman has consistently performed for the teams he has played for namely in India’s IPL and Australia’s Big Bash.

De Villers added, “If I do commit to something like that, I’d like to think that I’m going to be in the best form of my life, so I can bat, and score runs for my country.”
