“I’ve just had a son, my son is five months old, he had breathing difficulties, so I don’t want to come home to put him in more danger,” Deeney added.

In addition, The Guardian has stated, “The Office of National Statistics has found that black people are more than four times more likely to die from Covid-19.”

Deeney raised this in a meeting with the Premier League. He asked about any additional protection for BAME players.

“Within the meeting, I’ve asked very simple questions – for black, Asian and mixed ethnicity, you’re four times more likely to get the illness and are twice as likely to have long-lasting illnesses, is there any additional screening, heart stuff to see if anyone has got problems from that? No. Okay, well I feel like that should be addressed,” Deeney said.

Furthermore, the Watford captain has stated that the individuals behind ‘Project Restart’ did not have answers for Deeney’s questions on protection for BAME players.

“I feel that should be addressed. I can’t get a haircut until mid-July, but I can go and get in a box with 19 people and jump for a header? I don’t know how that works,” 31-year-old striker questioned.

It seems fair for Deeney to want to put his family’s health above football. Moreover, The player’s safety should be paramount to the Premier League. Yet they have no further protection for BAME players.
