The Premier League Confirms Six COVID-19 Cases

The Premier League has confirmed on Tuesday, that 748 tests were carried out on both players and non-playing staff. Six tests have come back positive.

The Premier League is testing its players twice a week, as most players return to training today in small groups.

However, not all the results have been made public. Burnley have confirmed that assistant coach, Ian Woan has tested positive for COVID-19. The Burnley assistant coach was tested on Sunday with the Burnley squad.

The Clarets released a statement on Tuesday evening confirming Woan’s diagnosis.

“Burnley football club can confirm that after completing a Covid-19 test on Sunday, 17th May, assistant manager Ian Woan has tested positive,” the statement read.

“In line with strict Premier League requirements and following a positive test, Ian will now self-isolate for a period of seven days, with a view to being tested again week commencing Monday 25th May. Ian is asymptomatic and is currently safe and well at home,” the club added.

In addition, Watford has confirmed three positive cases of COVID-19. The club stated that one player and two staff members have contracted the virus.

“Watford Football Club confirms that three people have tested positive for the Covid-19 virus following testing at the training ground over the past 48 hours. Of those three positive tests, one is a player and two are members of staff,” read the Watford statement.

The Hornets added that all three individuals would self-isolate and be tested at a later stage.

Test results from the second round of testing will be announced on Saturday, May 23. Thereafter, clubs will hold talks with the Premier League to begin contact training.

Premier League teams will continue training in small groups while being tested twice a week for COVID-19.
