Amiens And Toulouse Set For Relegation After Rejected Appeal

The French football league (LFP) cancelled Ligue 1 and Ligue 2. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are Ligue 1 champions. PSG were 12 points clear of second place, Marseille. In contrast, Amiens and Toulouse have been relegated.

Following the announcement from the French Prime Minister, Edouard Philippe, who announced that no sporting events would take place in France until September 2020.

However, Amiens called out the LFP, stating their decision was unjust and hasty. Amiens were in 19th position, 4 points off safety. They have called for the league to allow a 22-team format for the 2020/21 Ligue 1 season.

Amiens president Bernard Joannin has taken legal action against the LFP.

“To be clear, we are not asking for any financial compensation. What we want is the cancellation of the arbitrary relegation of Amiens. Full stop. We believe that the legal arguments are in our favour. I believe in French justice and I believe that we will be proven right,” said Joannin.

Joannin appealed to the Paris administrative tribunal. However, a French judge has rejected the case. The LFP released a statement regarding the matter.

“The LFP was pleased to learn that the appeals lodged by Olympique Lyonnais, Amiens SC, and Toulouse FC were rejected by the summary judge of the Paris Administrative Court,” the statement read.

“In three orders issued on Friday afternoon, the court ruled that the general decisions taken by the League’s board of directors on 30 April could only be challenged before the State Council, which is competent to hear regulatory decisions taken by national authorities such as the LFP,” the statement continued.

Lyon placed 7th in the final Ligue 1 table, therefore missing out on European football for the 2020/21 calendar. The club released a statement on its website.

“Olympique Lyonnais continues to think that French football is currently moving in the wrong direction but that it may not be too late to try to imagine, in the light of what is happening everywhere in Europe, something that is coherent in political, health and sport terms,” the statement read.

Nevertheless, Lorient are Ligue 2 champions. They have earned promotion alongside Lens to Ligue 1. The LFP has expanded Ligue 2 to a 22 team division.
