Naomi Osaka Tops Highest-Earning Female Athlete List

Naomi Osaka is the highest-paid female athlete according to Forbes. She has earned $37.4m over the past 12 months from endorsements and prize money.

The 22-year-old has dethroned, tennis legend, Serena Williams who has held the position of the highest-paid female athlete for four years. The 23-time Grand Slam champion has collected an annual pre-tax income ranging from $18 million to $29 million.

In addition, Osaka has also beaten Maria Sharapova’s 2015 record. In 2015 Sharapova earned a one-year record earnings of $29.7m. Osaka has surpassed this by $7.7m.

On the top 100 highest-paid athletes, Osaka ranks 29th with Williams ranking 33rd. This is the first time since 2016 that two female athletes are on the top 100 list. A list dominated by male athletes which highlights the gender pay gap.

Osaka is part of the management group IMG and has 15 sponsorship deals with global brands such as Nike, Nissan Motors, Shiseido, and Yonex.

For the upcoming Tokyo Olympics which is due to take place in 2021. Osaka holds dual citizenship and has opted to represent Japan at the Olympics. This will see her become one of the faces of the Olympics.

Osaka currently sits 10th on the WTA rankings with Williams just above in 9th. Tennis has been on hold worldwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All rankings have been frozen until tournaments resume.
