Cape Town City Out To Hurt Sundowns’ Title Hopes

"We expected it [tight fixture list] already. Everyone has to deal with it. We have to recover quickly. We will play four games in 10 days,"

Cape Town City are set to take on Mamelodi Sundowns in an Absa Premiership match at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Monday.

The Citizens are looking to secure their third successive win in the league after defeating Chippa United 1-0 away in a match which was played on Friday.

The victory took Cape Town City to the ninth spot on the league standings – two points behind seventh-placed Highlands Park and a win over Sundowns will see the Citizens move into the top eight.

Jan Olde Riekerink, the Cape Town City head coach, says it’s imperative for his side to recover quickly ahead of their big clash with the reigning Absa Premiership champions.

“We expected it [tight fixture list] already. Everyone has to deal with it. We have to recover quickly. We will play four games in 10 days,” Riekerink said.

“I am happy that we won the game [against Chippa] and I also am happy with the players’ attitude. I am really happy we had to add a few youngsters, they are catching up with the level and we are united.

“It’s not just one game. Now we have another game in three days. We have to recover quickly.”

Meanwhile, Sundowns stretched their unbeaten run to six matches in the league when drew 1-1 with Highlands Park on Friday, but they have now drawn their last two matches.

As a result, the Brazilians remain second on the league standings and they are now six points behind leaders, Kaizer Chiefs, but the former have a game in hand.

Pitso Mosimane, Mamelodi Sundowns head coach, says they are still determined to win the league title as they prepare for their encounter with Cape Town City.

“So we move on [after the draw with Highlands Park], what are we gonna do? Probably we’re not adjusting easily but it’s okay we still have to go on. We’re a very ambitious club, we try,” Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane said.

“We want more. You can say we’re a little bit greedy. We don’t sit on our laurels and say we just won the Telkom [Knockout] Cup and then it’s okay. We’re fighting for the league.

“Yes, it’s not coming out, we’re fighting for the Nedbank Cup, we’re in the final. We’re trying. It’s difficult, it’s not easy. We’re not really the same team as [before lockdown] and what are you going to say?”
