Former Two-Time World Champion Dies At 81

Former WBC and WBA junior middleweight champion Allesandro Mazzinghi was born on 3 October 1938 in Pontecera, Toscana, Italy he won the WBC and WBA junior middleweight titles on two occasions and also won the European junior middleweight title in an outstanding professional career of nearly 17 years.

Former WBC and WBA junior middleweight champion from Italy, Allesandro Mazzinghi passed away on Saturday at the age of 81.

Former WBC and WBA junior middleweight champion Allesandro Mazzinghi was born on 3 October 1938 in Pontecera, Toscana, Italy he won the WBC and WBA junior middleweight titles on two occasions and also won the European junior middleweight title in an outstanding professional career of nearly 17 years.

Allesandro Mazzinghi won his first world title in 1963 with a ninth round technical knockout win over America’s Ralph Dupas and made three defences of the title with his third defence being a sixth round stoppage loss against another outstanding Italian fighter Nino Benvenuti who was 56-0; 22 at the time; and an Olympic gold medal winner at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.

In a return match with Benvenuti Mazzinghi was beaten on points over 15 rounds.

On 26 May 1968 he regained the belts with a 15 round points decision over South Korean Ki-Soo Kim and in his first defence he retained the title on a controversial no decision against American Freddie Little, but soon afterwards the titles were declared vacant.

He would go on to win his last three fights before retiring from the ring in 1978 and finished with a record of 64-3, 2NC (42). The only other loss on his record was in July 1962 when Giampaolo Melis outpointed him over eight rounds.
