Andy Murray has been eliminated from the Winston-Salem Open, but British No. 1 Dan Evans has advanced to the third round in North Carolina.
Andy Murray, 34, was defeated by American Frances Tiafoe 7-6 (7-4) 6-3, while Evans, 31, defeated Frenchman Lucas Pouille 3-6 6-4 6-1.
Dan Evans, who missed the Olympics in Tokyo due to a positive Covid-19 test, will face Richard Gasquet in the last 16.
The players are getting ready for the US Open, which starts on August 30. Evans’ victory over Pouille ended a four-match losing streak that began with his third-round exit at Wimbledon.
Three break points were saved by Tiafoe in a tight first set, but he was broken twice in the second set as Tiafoe took a 5-1 lead.
After Swiss former champion Stan Wawrinka withdrew, the Scot, who won his first major title at the US Open in 2012, was added to the main draw at Flushing Meadows.
