Messi Scores First League Goal As PSG Move 13 Points Clear In France

Lionel Messi scored his first goal in Ligue 1 as Paris St-Germain beat Nantes late to move 13 points clear at the top.

Three minutes from time, Messi curled home a left-footed shot from 20 yards.

PSG took an early lead thanks to Kylian Mbappe, but the hosts were reduced to 10 men when goalkeeper Keylor Navas raced from his box to foul Ludovic Blas.

Nantes equalized through Randal Kolo Muani’s backheel, but Dennis Appiah’s freak own goal and Messi’s measured shot sealed the victory.

Les Parisiens’ 12th victory in 14 league games looked set to be a routine affair after dominating the first half, buoyed by Mbappe’s second-minute opener.

However, Nantes goalkeeper Albon Lafont kept the visitors in the game with a string of saves to deny Messi and Neymar before his counterpart Navas was sent off for a reckless rush of blood.

He was replaced. Sergio Rico, who came on for Neymar, made a good save on Muani’s header but couldn’t stop the Nantes forward’s improvised rebound.

However, Appiah’s interception of a Messi pass looped over Lafont from 20 yards before the former Barcelona playmaker, whose three previous PSG goals had all come in the Champions League, broke his domestic duck in his sixth Ligue 1 game.
