Man United’s pursuit of Bologna striker Marko Arnautovic has come to an end following reactions from fans and the player’s transfer fee increase.

Erik ten Hag, the new manager of Manchester United, was considering a move for the 33-year-old Austrian forward, with whom he previously worked at Dutch club FC Twente.

However, it is understood that United withdrew due to a combination of Bologna’s increasing transfer fee demands and the negative reaction. Fans who were against the move reportedly complained to United.

Ten Hag dismissed talk of signing the former West Ham United and Stoke City forward following United’s 2-1 loss to Brighton in their Premier League opener on Saturday.

Christian Eriksen started the game at Old Trafford as a false nine, with Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho operating in wider roles.

Anthony Martial was ruled out with a hamstring injury, and Cristiano Ronaldo was deemed unfit to play after only 45 minutes of pre-season action.

Between 2013 and 2019, Arnautovic scored 43 goals in 184 Premier League games.

According to BBC pundit Chris Sutton, news of Man United’s interest was “a PR disaster”.

“That’s madness,” he said on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club.

“I thought it was a spoof. It’s ridiculous. It’s a real wrong move in terms of the eyes of the supporters.”
