Japan Returns To The F1 Calendar For The First Time Since 2019

Verstappen needs to gain eight points on Leclerc and ten points on Perez to clinch the title on Sunday, the only two drivers still in his way for the title. He leads Leclerc by 104 points and Perez by 106.

Japan returns to the F1 calendar for the first time since 2019 due to the pandemic, and Verstappen said the race at Suzuka was “extra special” for the team because of Red Bull’s relationship with engine supplier Honda.

The Japanese company officially exited F1 at the end of last season, but has continued to build and supply engines to Red Bull under a “technical support” relationship.

This weekend the Honda logo will be back on the Red Bull cars and those of sister team Alpha Tauri for the first time since the final race of last season.

The move reinforces the perception within F1 that Honda was still involved in the sport this year, despite announcing its intention to leave the sport to focus on zero-emission mobility.

Verstappen needs to gain eight points on Leclerc and ten points on Perez to clinch the title on Sunday, the only two drivers still in his way for the title. He leads Leclerc by 104 points and Perez by 106.

The last time the championship was decided with four races to go was in 2011, when Sebastian Vettel won the second of his four consecutive titles.

There are numerous possibilities. However, if Verstappen wins but does not take the fastest lap, he needs Leclerc to finish lower than second to be certain of the title.

If Verstappen finishes second, by some miracle Leclerc must finish lower than fourth and Perez must finish lower than fifth.

Leclerc led Verstappen by 46 points after the first three races of the season, but Ferrari’s season has imploded due to a series of operational and strategic errors by the team, as well as reliability issues.
