Sri Lanka dominated the match and win with five overs to spare thanks to Kusal Mendis’ unbeaten 68 off 43 balls.

Ireland had earlier limped to a 128-8 victory, with top-scorer Harry Tector, who hit 45 off 42 attempts, one of only three players to reach double figures.

Sri Lanka’s spinners were especially strong, with Maheesh Theekshana taking 2-19 and Wanindu Hasaranga taking 2-25.

As a result, Sri Lanka is now second in early Group 1 with two points, trailing only New Zealand and England on net run rate.

“I’m really happy about the way we played the game – we wanted to play as a team and everyone contributed,” said Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka.

The 2014 champions will now travel to Perth on Tuesday to face holders Australia. The following day, Ireland will face England in Melbourne.
