Tunisia Defeated France And Still Eliminated Off World Cup

France had a goal ruled out for offside in the final minute of stoppage time, but Tunisia held on for a stunning victory.

Despite their victory, they were unable to advance to the World Cup’s last 16.

Substitute At the Education City Stadium, Antoine Griezmann volleyed in a dramatic equalizer, but the VAR decision meant Tunisia captain Wahbi Khazi’s brilliant first-half goal proved to be the winner.

However, with Australia defeating Denmark 1-0 in the other Group D match, Tunisia’s hopes of progressing were dashed even before Griezmann’s goal was ruled out.

“It’s mixed feelings because we’re happy to beat a team like France,” said Tunisia manager Jalel Kadri.

“We can be proud and leave with our head high, but it is a bitter victory.

“It would have been beautiful to beat France and reach the last 16. It is our fault for not doing what we needed to do before.”

France advanced to the last 16 as group winners, having already qualified with a win over Denmark in the previous game.

Despite their elimination, Tunisia captain Khazi provided the moment fans had been waiting for: a goal at this World Cup. He drove to the edge of the box and coolly rolled it into the bottom right corner.

There wasan outpouring of emotion from the stadium’s large Tunisian crowd, and Tunisian substitutes sprinted onto the pitch in a moment of pure joy.

Their joy was short-lived, however, as word of Australia’s lead spread throughout the stadium, with fans checking their phones for updates from the other Group D match.

France put on a lackluster performance despite having already qualified as group winners thanks to their 2-1 victory over Denmark.
